Named after a 1842 Nikolai Gogol novel, the instrumental intro was used for lead singer Ian Curtis to see what groove the audience was in before jumping in with his brooding lyrics of doom. The bass line by Peter Hook is one of the main driving forces for behind the songs amazingness. Only released a few months before lead singer Ian Curtis Death is another haunting aspect of the tracks lyrics and vibe. When playing the song live, Curtis would unleash a dance that would entrance the audience.
Released in March of 1980, the song has drawn inspiration from many bands. Including an amazing cover on The Crow Soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails. Many recognize Dead Souls to be one of the best tracks Joy Division ever recorded. The lyrics read “They Keep On Calling Me” which could be scary for any Dead Soul to do. But the Joy Division track always keeps calling me back to blast!
