As soon as I saw the Simpson/Bruckheimer logo, I knew I was in for a wild ride. That logo has meant so much to me through the years, and I never realized how Bad Boys, The Rock, Beverly Hills Cop, and Dangerous Minds all played a massive part in my growing up and adolescence.
I can’t and won’t spoil it for you, but in my opinion Tom Cruise just “kicked the tires and lit the fires” under Hollywood. Now don’t get me wrong, I love Marvel movies. They are big and fun, and they bring all these fantastic characters that Stan Lee created to the big screen, something as a kid I never imagined possible. It was a conversation my friends and I had while we were renting a movie or going to the theatre, “Can you imagine if they made a movie with Iron Man in it?!” Top Gun: Maverick felt different. This felt like those movies @lilyumper and I discussed on our most recent episode of Yumper and Svo Show Podcast. It felt like a summer blockbuster, a movie you plan your night around. I know it will sound corny, but it felt like I was a teenager again.
Top Gun: Maverick doesn’t change what made the first film amazing, but seriously who cares? We loved these characters, and 36 years later our love for them hasn’t changed. Jennifer Connelly is absolutely fantastic as Penny, a bar owner in San Diego, who once had a romantic tryst with Cruise during those 36 years, and Connelly is every bit as charismatic as the first time I saw her in Career Opportunities. Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, a cocky know-it-all with a taste for the extreme and breaking rules. All personal feelings aside, I love watching his movies.
This felt like those movies @lilyumper and I discussed on our most recent episode of Yumper and Svo Show Podcast. It felt like a summer blockbuster, a movie you plan your night around. I know it will sound corny, but it felt like I was a teenager again. We talk a lot on the pod about where we were and who we saw movies with and that’s what makes them special. I saw this by myself after what was the longest week of my life, taking care of my wife while she was sick. I am so grateful that I could use this time to recharge and reset myself after an emotionally exhausting week.
This movie is meant to be seen on the big screen and if you can Dolby. It’s fun. It’s loud. It’s fantastic. It’s everything a summer blockbuster movie should be. I’m very much looking forward to our private screening for you all next Saturday. Two Svos Up.
