Thanksgiving is a beautiful holiday, it’s a time to be thankful for various aspects of your life. Everyone reading this can arguably find something to be thankful for, I myself am thankful for wifi and being alive at the same time as the band Ghost during their touring years. When you factor in the theme of eating food, this holiday should be top ranked. The reason for this article is to focus on the audacity of it being absolutely steamrolled by Christmas.
Christmas is arguably the biggest holiday of the year, without question. Lets be honest though, it’s really just because of the presents. Don’t try to tell me it’s about the family gathering and the food-if that was true then Thanksgiving would get the full month of November like it deserves.
I was in Kohls a couple weeks ago, essentially mid October, and there was already Christmas music playing. CHRISTMAS MUSIC. IN OCTOBER. The spooky holiday hadn’t even happened yet!!! That didn’t stop the stores from shoving Santa and a Christmas tree down our throat when really we should be focused on the dinner rolls we’re gonna plow through before Thanksgiving dinner. It really is a tragedy that a holiday centered around food and gathering with loved ones is so rudely overshadowed by a holiday that is also centered around food and gathering but with poorly wrapped mystery boxes filled with shit we don’t need.
Another solid thing about Thanksgiving is that it isn’t a money driven holiday. You bring people together and have some snacks on plates? Boom, you’re celebrating accordingly. There isn’t a need for a 30 lb turkey or gallons of cranberry sauce to make the holiday enjoyable-the same cannot be said about Christmas. A Christmas with no presents by society standards largely defeats the purpose which is unfair to low-income families, folks whose love language is gift giving, and kids whose birthdays are also on or around Christmas. Basically, thanksgiving is a way more inclusive holiday that allows for more stray from the norm without taking away from the point.
I’m not asking people to not have holiday cheer, I’m simply asking that you wait until Black Friday like a decent human being. Gather with folks you love, eat your favorite foods, enjoy November for the great month that it is and give Thanksgiving the time it deserves. If you are too focused on Christmas already and need help dialing it back, maybe take the time to watch the Thanksgiving Episode of It’s Getting Drafty In Here where we ranked our favorite foods.
Merry Whatever to you all.
