Sadistic Penguin Studios

The Hookup On Music Presents 31 Horror Tunes For Halloween Day 6: XTC- The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead

The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC was released on June 1st of 1992.  It was inspired by a Jack-O-Lantern that Lead Singer/Guitarist Andy Partridge had carved and placed on the fence at his home.  He would pass it on the way to the recording studio on his property.  He began to notice how it was decaying and felt sorry for it resulting in the Pumpkinhead track.  If you can check out one of the many versions of the music video, which is a rare treat for any music fan you will be better off.

The songs lyrics are scary in the way that an innocent person can meet his demise.  I’ve always thought the title was perfect for Halloween.  Crash Test Dummies have released a good cover of the classic track.  In 1992, it appeared on the Modern Rock Billboard Charts at #1.  A great accomplishment for any Pumpkinhead!
